A lot of instruments require old computers to work. What are the best computers given old OS requirements?

Windows XP

TLDR:

  • Currently focused on Dell, but open to other options
  • Optiplex 790
    • Why: best / newest option if you only need 1x conventional PCI
    • Circa 2011
    • OS: XP, Vista, 7, 8
    • CPU: Intel ® 2nd Generation Core™ i7, i5, i3 Processors (LGA1155)
    • MT (full size) slots:
      • 1x conventional PCI

  • Dell Precision T3400
    • Why: best option for 3x conventional PCI
    • OS: XP, Vista, 7
    • CPU: Intel®  CoreTM  2 (LGA775)
    • Circa 2008

      • 2 PCI-e x16 graphics slot
      • 1 PCI-e x8 slot wired as x4
      • 3 PCI 32bit/33MHz slot with support for 5v cards
  • Dell Optiplex 960
    • Why: another option if you need 2x conventional PCI
    • Circa 2008
    • OS: XP, Vista, 7

      • 2x conventional PCI
      • 1x pcie x16


"it is somewhat paradoxical, but the 790 is actually a newer computer than the 960. Wikipedia has a good overview https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_OptiPlex#Series_4 it is the second digit that designates the generation for that era, so the x90 sandy bridge and x010 ivy bridge are the most recent ones supported by XP"

Max HDD size?

  • "While NTFS is limited to a volume size limit of 256 TB, windows XP 32-bit only supports HDD's up to 2TB in size. This is because XP only supports disks in MBR format, and the max MBR supports is 2TB"
